Stasia knew that after our long flight we’d want a bit of luxury to recuperate – and she rightly set us up in the Metropolitan Como.
Big and beautiful, sleek and modern, sophistication just oozed from the modernist furniture, sculptured water features and balsam scented shower products.

We were too jet-lagged to utilize the hotel’s amenities that first night. The next morning however, with Stasia and I awake at 3 and up drinking coffee at 4am, found us taking in the sunrise and ready for action.
The second of many fantastic meals
Breakfast was a refreshingly varied affair – offering a combination of hot-dish local favorites and a lovely buffet.
- Stasia got avocado toast on a homemade seed and nut cracker bread that looked almost too beautiful to eat
- Zephyr got a rice soup thing that he didn’t end up liking much
- I got a lovely Thai dish that consisted of fried pork belly, soft boiled eggs, broiled tomato, roasted corn and dark sticky rice
The buffet looked small, but had a quality assortment of meats, breads, pastries, fruits and vegetable salads (shredded carrot & herbs, tomatoes and lemon, beets and pomegranate, potatoes and corn).
All that, along with basil pudding and a mango tapioca concoction was consumed with much noshing and vigorous pleasure.

Pool partying
Our extravagant repast was followed by a dip in the hotel’s large pool (we had it all to ourselves at 7am), kept at a welcoming 90 degrees. We swam, dunked, tickled, splashed and threw each other around for a half hour – our revelry cut short only by our impending schedule – though we left time to sample the meditative jacuzzi (lovely) and the scorching steam room (dangerous).

I was the subject of many overthrows
9AM – fully fed and caffeinated, with a lovely swim, sauna, shower behind us, we met our engaging guide ‘Nai’ for a tour of the city.
